Chapter Twelve

Regina fought hard to makes steps with her cane. She and Priscilla left their lunch with Jamecia headed to Planet Fit. This was the fourth time she’d gotten off the floor, but this time she was determined to walk on her own.

Regina closed her eyes and bowed her head.

“Lord, You have known the desires of my heart. You have known me and have searched my mind for deeper understanding. I trust You and believe You can speak a word and I do what it is Your will for me to do. Lord, align Your will with my desire to walk on my own, in Jesus name. Amen.”

“Amen.” Priscilla softly spoke as she stood right next to her friend and sister.

“Well, here it goes,” Regina said and stepped forward with her right leg first, and then her left leg. Slow and steady, slow and steady. She repeated the motion, again, and again, and again. And when she reached the wall, she put her face against the wall and cried.

“You did, sis! You did it!” Priscilla screamed loudly. The entire gym began clapping and chanting, “Regina, Regina.”

All of those people watched her fall, get back up, try again, cry, and start all over again. It was just not her accomplishment, but the entire gym won today.

She turned around holding both arms in the air as a display of pure victory. And as soon as she dropped her arms, she started again as if she’d never been rewarded.

As much as she felt gracious, she also felt not worthy. At least, not until she walked the aisle of Faith Temple Cathedral, to stand before the love of her life.

Making the same trip an additional four more times wore Regina out. Priscilla suggested they sit in the ice tubs and although the initial shock of the cold was crazy, after two minutes or so, it felt heavenly.

“I’m so proud of you, girl.”

“Priscilla, to be honest, I’m proud of myself. I knew I could do it, but look how long it took.”

“Well, that doesn’t matter now. What matters is you hung in there and didn’t give up.”

“Girl, you know that’s not in my DNA. I want things to be exactly like they were when Nathan and I first met. I want him to look at my legs the way he did the day he followed me to the car.”

“The boy still be foaming all over you. And, Regina, you’ve practiced so hard walking straight, even when you do have the cane, it looks like an accessorized prop.” They both laughed.

No one she’d ever seen changed the colors of their cane with every outfit. She knew if she had to rock with it, it was very well going to be an accessory and not a need.

She would never, ever use the word handicap, especially as a verb to describe her present state, occurrence, or situation.

“He loves me, Priscilla, and that’s all I ever wanted. Girl, when I woke up from my first surgery, to see his head bowed by my bed did something to my heart.
